Bill and Melinda Gates show that courts aren’t the only option for separation

Bill and Melinda Gates agreed ‘separation contract’ before announcing divorce

Bill and Melinda Gates agreed upon a ‘separation contract showing a growing trend among divorcing couples, allowing separation without the involvement of the courts.

The couple had been married for 27 years, meeting in the 80’s when Melinda was working for Microsoft. Before marriage the couple did not have a pre-nuptial agreement, they were said to write a private agreement to divide their assets before announcing their divorce.

The couple worked with lawyers for at least a year before the official announcement was given, this was done to avoid the need for litigation through the courts.

This shows that there are now more options than ever to settle differences and separate without recourse to litigation. The aftermath of Covid-19 has created a back-log for the courts, and so couples seeking to separate have now started to look for alternative methods of separation. This change is also backed by family judges that are increasingly using their powers to push couples away from the courts with orders to resolve the separation between themselves.

Among other options available to divorcing couples is mediation
